Sony Pictures Animation has officially confirmed production on ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines 2’, the sequel to the studio’s widely acclaimed and original animated feature ‘The Mitchells vs. The Machines’.

The first film followed the quirky Mitchell family as they embarked on a cross-country road trip to take eldest daughter Katie to film school—only to find themselves humanity’s last hope when an AI named PAL leads a robot uprising. The comedy adventure was celebrated for its distinctive hand-drawn visual style, earning eight Annie Awards (including Best Animated Feature) and an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2021.

Guillermo Martinez, who oversaw the story of the first installment and later contributed to ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ and ‘K-Pop: Demon Hunters’, returns for the sequel. JP Sans, co-director of ‘The Bad Guys 2’, will helm the project alongside him.

As with the original, Netflix will distribute the film through its licensing deal with Sony, with production set to begin in early 2026. Mike Rianda, co-writer and co-director of the first film, will serve as executive producer on the sequel.
