The first official still from the live-action adaptation of Nintendo’s ‘The Legend of Zelda’ has been revealed, offering a tantalizing glimpse into one of the most anticipated game-to-film projects in recent years.
Nintendo announced the start of principal photography — along with the debut look at the film’s key characters — through a news update on its Nintendo Today app on the 17th. The project marks a major milestone for the studio as it brings one of its most iconic franchises into live action for the first time.
Production on the live-action ‘The Legend of Zelda’ is underway in New Zealand, and the newly released still offers the first official glimpse at the film’s two leads. Beau Braggerson is set to play Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth steps into the iconic role of Link — a pairing that’s already winning praise for its striking resemblance to the game’s original character designs.
In the image, both actors appear in outfits that blend classical fantasy aesthetics with motifs instantly recognizable to longtime fans. Zelda stands against a serene, wide-open field, dressed in a blue ensemble and carrying a quiver over her shoulder. Link, clad in his signature green tunic, cuts a lone figure in the wilderness, anchoring the film visually to the beloved franchise.
Plot details and additional casting remain tightly under wraps for now, but Nintendo and Sony are expected to unveil more behind-the-scenes material and production updates in the coming months. With anticipation building across both the fan community and the industry, many are eager to see how the adaptation will translate the game’s vast mythology and iconic imagery into a live-action format.
Since its debut in 1986, ‘The Legend of Zelda’ has stood as one of Nintendo’s most defining franchises, shaping the action-adventure genre for nearly four decades. The series follows the hero Link as he journeys across Hyrule to stop Ganon’s ambitions and protect Princess Zelda, weaving puzzle-solving, exploration, and combat into a game design that has consistently pushed the medium forward.
The more recent entries —’ Breath of the Wild (2017)’ and ‘Tears of the Kingdom (2023)’ — redefined open-world gameplay and earned sweeping acclaim, collecting major awards and reigniting global enthusiasm for the franchise.
