‘Conclave’ Director’s New Film ‘The Ballad of a Small Player’ Set for Netflix Release

Edward Berger, acclaimed for ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and ‘Conclave’, returns with his latest feature ‘The Ballad of a Small Player’, premiering on Netflix this October 29.

Based on the novel of the same name by British author Lawrence Osborne, the film unfolds a mysterious tale set against the backdrop of Macau’s glittering casino scene.

Centered around the baccarat tables of Macau, the story follows a man on the run from his past mistakes and debts, who stakes his last chips on a small bet—only to encounter a cryptic woman who draws him into an escalating game of tension and fate. What begins as a modest wager soon spirals into a gripping descent filled with suspense and moral reckoning.

Colin Farrell, known for ‘The Batman’ and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, stars as Doyle, while Tilda Swinton brings her signature intensity to the enigmatic role of Cynthia, promising a compelling on-screen dynamic between the two.
